£13m for city's waterfront plans
Oct 13, 2008The first major investment in plans to regenerate Wakefield's waterfront has been announced.
Regional development agency Yorkshire Forward is investing £5.5m, while the European Regional Development Fund has earmarked more than £8m for the scheme.
During the first phase of the works, the Grade II listed Calder and Hebble Navigation warehouse will be restored to provide office space and flats.
Other work includes flood prevention and highway improvements.
'See results'
A master plan for Wakefield, drawn up by Yorkshire Forward and Wakefield Council as part of the renaissance programme, has identified a range of projects to be completed over the next 25 years.
These include the redevelopment of the Wakefield Westgate station area and the Marsh Way retail scheme, which will also include a new public library.
Deputy Council Leader Phil Dobson said people would start to see a transformation in the city.
"This is the first part of the exciting schemes which will see the regeneration of our city and kick start the work on the waterfront," he said.
"A lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes to get the project to this stage and people will now get to see the results of that work and look forward to the commercial and cultural benefits it will bring."
