Women warned over unlicensed cabs

Dec 21, 2008

Women enjoying the festive break are being warned not to use unlicensed taxis in Leeds as a means of getting home after a night out.

Council officials have said the regulated taxis and private hire vehicles operating the city are clearly identified with markings.

Since the introduction of the markings there have been no reports of sex assaults on passengers.

Private hire taxis should be pre-booked or use cabs from ranks, officials said.

Councillor Les Carter, who is responsible for community safety in the city said simple precautions could save a lot of trouble.

"Travelling by taxi or private hire in Leeds is generally very safe, but it is important to make sure the vehicle is licensed and to take sensible precautions.

"In Leeds, all of our taxis and private hire vehicles are clearly marked.

"If you are partying in the city this Christmas, make sure you pre-book your journey home.

"If you can't do that, then take a black and white taxi from a taxi rank. Never never never, get into an unlicensed taxi."

Maintain order

Taxi marshals are on patrol at taxi ranks in Leeds city centre on Fridays and Saturdays throughout December, as well as Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.

The marshals will be present at at the Leeds Railway Station taxi rank, the Corn Exchange/Call Lane taxi rank and the taxi rank adjacent to Oceana.

They are there to maintain order and assist people to leave the city centre safely after enjoying their night out.

Mr Carter added: "It is also a good idea to make a note of the number plate and driver's licence number and text them to someone as an extra precaution.

"If you have a camera phone you could also take a picture of the vehicle.

"Always sit in the back of the vehicle and carry your mobile phone in your hand so it is easily accessible."
